The FPE tail runs straight through the east end
Orléans occupies a specific slot in the timeline that Ottawa Panel Upgrades quotes against every week. The suburb's defining growth spurt — Convent Glen and Queenswood Heights in the 1970s, Chapel Hill and Fallingbrook through the 1980s — arrived after the knob-and-tube era was long over and mostly after the aluminum-wiring window closed in 1976. What that housing wave did inherit was the panel brands: Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok remained a standard Canadian builder choice through both decades, alongside Commander and Sylvania load centres. An east-end home that has never had its service touched is very likely still running one of them.
That makes the Orléans version of this project unusually clean. There is rarely legacy wiring to untangle — the file is usually a straight panel-for-panel replacement, which sits at the low end of the sourced cost ranges.
"But my house isn't that old"
The most common east-end objection deserves a direct answer: Stab-Lok equipment was not a 1960s relic that faded out. Independent testing has documented failure-to-trip behaviour in FPE-design breakers manufactured as recently as 2015, and Canadian production of the design continued long after the U.S. controversy. A 1985 Fallingbrook two-storey is not exempt by age — only the label inside the panel door says whether it's affected. Ninety seconds with a phone camera answers it.
Growing-family load note: Orléans' singles are prime candidates for finished-basement suites, hot tubs and EV chargers. If any of those are in your plans, have the contractor run the load calculation and price the 200-amp upgrade inside the same quote — doing it during a panel swap shares most of the labour cost.
East-end logistics
Everything runs on the standard city process — ESA notification, inspection, certificate — with Hydro Ottawa handling the disconnect across urban Orléans and the contractor booking it in advance. Owners responding to an insurer questionnaire will find the escalation path and the paperwork that ends it on the insurance page; owners in a purchase or sale, the deal mechanics on buying or selling. Coverage extends past Trim Road into Cumberland and Navan.
