The 2026 ranges, and where they come from
Prices below are drawn from published Canadian and Ottawa-specific guides rather than invented — Ottawa Panel Upgrades exists to route you to a licensed partner contractor for a real written number, and orientation figures only earn trust when their sources exist. National inspection references put a straight panel swap around $1,500–$3,000; Ottawa cost guides published for 2026 put the 100-to-200-amp upgrade at roughly $2,000–$5,500 and a full service-entrance rebuild at $4,000–$8,000. Where no credible published figure exists, the table says so instead of guessing.
| Job | Published range | What's inside the number |
|---|---|---|
| Like-for-like panel swap Federal Pioneer, Commander/Sylvania or fuse panel out; modern CSA-certified panel in at existing amperage |
$1,500 – $3,000 | New panel and breakers, circuit transfer and labelling, ESA notification, disconnect/reconnect coordination |
| Panel + 100→200-amp upgrade The bundle most Ottawa owners choose — details on the 200-amp page |
$2,000 – $5,500 | 200-amp panel and main breaker, new service conductors as required, Hydro Ottawa coordination, ESA permit and labour |
| Full service-entrance rebuild Mast, meter base and exterior hardware replaced along with the panel |
$4,000 – $8,000 | Everything above plus exterior service equipment — the version quoted when the entrance itself has aged out |
| Knob-and-tube full rewire Typical central-Ottawa home, panel upgrade included — see the K&T guide |
$12,000 – $22,000 | All live K&T replaced with grounded cable, patching openings, 200-amp panel, ESA inspection; per-circuit removals published at ~$400–$800 |
| Aluminum wiring pigtailing Per connection point, using approved connectors — see the aluminum guide |
~$150 – $300 / connection | Copper pigtails at outlets, switches and fixtures; whole-house totals depend entirely on device count, so treat any flat figure with suspicion |
| ESA notification fee | ~$150 – $500 | Published guidance varies with scope; normally folded into the contractor's price — confirm in writing |
Honesty note: Hydro Ottawa disconnect/reconnect charges and any exterior repair items (stucco, siding around a new mast) vary by property and aren't reliably published — expect them itemized on the quote rather than promised here.
The four levers that move your number
- Which of the three jobs it really is. The single biggest source of quote confusion in Ottawa is comparing a bare swap against a service-entrance rebuild as if they were the same product.
- Panel location and access. A panel in an unfinished basement wall is the easy case. Finished rec rooms, closets that violate current clearance rules, or a required relocation add hours.
- What's found when the panel opens. Overfused circuits, double-tapped breakers, aluminum branch wiring from the 1965–76 window — common in the same houses that have the old panels, and cheapest to correct while everything is already open.
- Season and scheduling. Exterior mast work in an Ottawa February is slower than the same job in June; insurer-deadline files also compress schedules.
One quote, itemized, in writing — the standard to hold everyone to
Whatever contractor you use — through this site or not — insist the quote name the panel brand and amperage, state whether service conductors and exterior hardware are included, show the ESA fee, and say who books Hydro Ottawa. That single page of discipline is the difference between a real price and a starting bid. Partner contractors quote to that standard by default; it's a condition of being in the network. If your renewal letter has a date on it, the insurance guide explains how to sequence quote → permit → work → certificate inside the window.
